Over the past few years of delivering virtual services, we’ve curated a list of favorite websites offering free materials and trials. This past year, we discovered two standout resources that we’re excited to share with you!
#1- QUIZZIZ- https://quizizz.com/?lng=en
Quizziz is a site that offers pre-made lesson plans to teach the skill and then quiz opportunities to see if the clients have taken in the material. This is appropriate for all ages, and it is fantastic for individuals AND group sessions!
Sign up for the FREE version (like I did), and you will find sufficient resources without feeling like you need to upgrade to a paid version. Just click on the “Teachers Sign Up Free” option and create an account with your email address. Next, search for any topic you need. I would say it is best used when working on language skills, as there isn’t a lot of speech sound practice (unless you upgrade to a paid version where you can create your activities). If you want to make lessons on your own but aren’t interested in paying out of pocket, reach out to your school district or employer and see if they would be willing to pay for your subscription. Again, it isn’t necessary as I have gotten what I need without paying for a subscription.
To use, browse the already-made activities by searching for terms in the search bar.
In this example, I typed in “Context Clues” (but I’ve used it for targets like main idea, vocabulary comprehension, pragmatic language concepts, etc…), and you will find an array of premade lesson plans and quiz opportunities.
Other perks include the ability to send practice materials home via email. I do this all the time, especially for clients who frequently miss sessions when there’s a long break from therapy and when parents request weekly homework- now you don’t have to think too hard about what you will send!
#2- COGNISHINE- https://cognishine.com/en-us/free-activities
I have recommended Cognishine countless times due to their beautiful images, engaging video clips, and the fact that their resources are appropriate across ALL age groups and impairments. They offer a variety of FREE activities:
After about a year of using their free activities, I decided to dive in and purchase an annual subscription. If you contact them, they will offer a group rate as well! It was worth it, as it became a staple in my therapy planning. The website provides its materials in Cognition, Language, Speech, and Social-Emotional categories. In addition, you can send activities “home” with your clients (a tutorial is provided).
Within the Cognition section, you can work on memory, recall, sequencing, discussions called “Did you know” with themed topics, sorting, and finding what does not belong.
The Language tab offers a variety of auditory comprehension, story-telling, naming, and formulating questions activities.
If you are working on intelligibility, you will go to the Speech section to find the practice at syllable, word, multi-syllable, phrase, and sentence levels.
I appreciate the social-emotional category as it gives you access to social inference, points of view, and materials for identifying emotions.
They offer a newer feature called the Speech and Language Studio, consisting of hand-selecting target words (which appears excellent when working in mixed groups of different goals). This includes practice for articulation and various language goals (verbs, prepositions, adjectives, interjections).
This is one of those websites you can rely on when in a time crunch or if your current activity isn’t going to plan (and you need to switch it on the spot). Check it out when you get the chance! https://cognishine.com/en-us/
We hope these resources spark new ideas and make your virtual sessions even more engaging and effective. By integrating tools like these into your practice, you can save time while providing dynamic and meaningful experiences for your clients. If you’ve discovered any other valuable websites or tools, we’d love to hear about them—let’s keep building a community of shared knowledge!
Note: I have no financial ties to these companies, and this is not an ad.
